How did the Irish great-grandson of the wine chateau owner come to marry the mulatto lady from Virginia? Finally found Cora McDaniel and her one-year-old son Archie on the 1880 census in Orange County, Virginia. Cora was a servant in the household of R.T. Stanard. Richard was a farmer in the same county. No marriage record has been found yet, but we do have the document admitting R. P. Phelan to be a citizen of the United States. April 19, 1886. Court of County of Culpeper, VA. Richd Phelan,age 20, arrived May 3, 1869 in port of New York on ship called Minnesota. Richard Phelan, age 22, arrived July 31, 1871 in port of Baltimore on ship called North American. Richard Phelan, working for his passage as a sailor, went back to England in early 1890. He managed to get home to London before his father died. He is on the 1890 census in England with his mother and is listed as single. There is a one hundred year old photo album with a dedication in the front to Richard from his mother Sarah Phelan. On the 1900 census Richard and Cora Phelan and Archie Phelan are living in Brooklyn, NY. They told the census taker they had been married 18 years and that Archie was only 16 which is a tidy story but Archie was actually 20. Archie's diary from September 1906 says "Called home by Mother. She thought she was going to die." The next entry by Archie was on October 2, 1906: "Mother dead. Today the end." Cora Phelan was buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Brooklyn. Her death certificate states that her parents were Samuel McDonald and Emma. Richard Paul Phelan lived to see his two grandchildren born, his grandson given the middle name Paul and his grand-daughter given the middle name Cora.
